Skins - Generation 3; Series 5

skins, Fragile
A few days ago, the newest Generation of Skins was announced. The actors had been announced in August, but the actual characters hadn't. Now, not only do we have pictures and character names, but also character profiles.

I'm truthfully looking forward to this new generation. I can say that I didn't find out about the show until last year this time, so I haven't been through the whole generation change before. Generation 1, as most fans will say, was the best. Nothing can or will ever top them. Generation 2 lacked something. It was good, though. I don't like to go back and rewatch episodes of that Generation like I do with Generation 1 episodes. I guess one of the biggest things was I didn't like most of the Generation 2 characters. I can't really say why. Now don't worry, I did love Naomi and Emily. I also, surprisingly, loved Katie. Other than them, I thought the rest all lacked something. I also just got bored with their stories. I honestly wasn't interested in anything because none of it seemed intriguing. It wasn't just that their characters lacked . . . character but that the writers didn't even try (in my opinion) to make the characters have a story.

But this isn't about Generation 2. This is about Generation 3. And after seeing their pictures and profiles, I think they might be a bit more interesting to watch.

First, you've got Franky Fitzgerald, played by Dakota Blue Richards. I'm pretty sure she'll be the main character, like Tony and Effy were, unless they don't do a main thing. People are saying she's a bit too much like Effy. I don't see it. She's a bit odd, yes, but we haven't really gotten to know her character aside from the profile. I don't see her getting involved with anyone in this series either. But then again, who said I could see the future?

Mini McGuinness, played by Freya Mevor, is the super sweetest girlie you've ever meet. For reals. YES, her character sounds extremely annoying. People are comparing her to Michelle. Well, Michelle was like Mini, but Mini kind of . . . has a hell of a lot more arrogance going for her. Much more of an outgoing personality. I don't really see how they are exactly alike, but whatever. I think she'll end up being more entertaining than annoying, but we'll see. She's with her bestest friends Liv and Grace, and her boyfriend Nick at Roundview.

Liv (Olivia) Malone, played by Laya Lewis, seems like the annoying one. She looks a LOT like Jal. Doubt the writers and creators intended for that, but perhaps they should have taken that into consideration. I'll probably keep thinking it's Jal, but she's acting really different. I'm following her (and the others) on twitter. She tweeted a few days ago about death metal and it being sexy. I'm wondering if that's just to confuse the fans or foreshadowing her and Rich. Hmm.

The final girl in this series, Grace Violet, played by Jessica Sula. She's an actress. She's also being compared to Cassie. Don't agree with that, either. I have not a clue what to think of her. She could either be awesome or horrible, we'll just have to wait, now won't we?! People are also saying she's going to be with Matty. I love when fans couple people up just because they seem to be alike. But it is true when it comes to Mini's boyfriend.

Next is Alo. Or, the Harry Potter-esque name, Aloysius Creevey, played by Will Merrick. I've seen people say that he's going to be another Sid or something. I think unlike Sid, he's probably lucky when it comes to females. I can't see the writers giving us a copy of a previous character. He's a ginger, so that gives him 5 points in my book. 5 more because he's a natural. ;) I'm betting he's good friends with the next person of whom is . . .

Rich Hardbeck, played by Alex Arnold. He's a metalhead. Um, I'm a major female-fronted metalhead, so I'm actually really excited to see what this guy ends up being like. Plus, Skins tends to mock stereotypes and such, so it'll be cool to see how they avoid such stereotypical characteristics of such. According to an interview the actor did, Rich meets a girl and it kind of spins his world. "A metal take on a love story". I could totally see him ending up with Mini, due to their exact opposite-ness. And as far as I remember, Skins hasn't done that yet.

Nick Levan, played by Sean Teale, seems a bit like Tony (series 1) only nicer. But, beware I'm about to give away a spoiler!!! In other words, if you don't want to know then I suggest you skip to the next paragraph. Apparently Nick is cheating on Mini with her friend Grace. Woah, did not see that coming!

The last member of Generation 3 is Matty, played by Sebastian De Souza. He seems like a very interesting character. I think he and Franky will be the most complex characters. Looking forward to see what this guy is all about though.

I'm really excited for the trailer for the new series. People also keep going on about no one attractive in the new generation. You know what? Attractiveness isn't the only reason people what the show! I've heard it airs January 27th!

OH, and US Skins starts before that. I think a week or something. But we all know Skins will still be better than US Skins !

Skins: USA

To be perfectly honest, when I first heard about this I freaked out. One of my favorite shows is being remade?! Wtf. I was (and still sort of am) against this. I don't see why anyone would mess with anything that was great. I am attempting to keep an open mind about this. Every Skins fan out there is against this. Well...probably not every fan, but the majority. As I said, I was on the same side as them at first. After seeing the promos that were shown, I freaked out all over again. Same characters and same plot...AHHHH! NOO!!!!! Exact same scenes...why?!?!!?!?

Now, I've come to the conclusion: We need to stop judging. It may be the same (it's been promised to not stay the same throughout the series), but it's a different interpretation. It's being done with the original Skins creator. It's similar to a book being turned into a movie, it's a different interpretation of the same-ish story. This could honestly go either way. It really could. No one will ever be as amazing as the original cast of Skins, or the original show at all. There could be things we like in this new version. There will be things we hate. But I don't think anyone can completely judge it by only having seen the two promos. I'm also pretty sure this is the biggest thing for the actors, so let's not give them shit...yet. At least give them a chance to air the first episode.

Let me first restate: THE ORIGINAL SKINS WILL NEVER BE REPLACED BY ANYTHING. All the original actors to play the characters will be better than these US kids.

Something I know I will NOT be able to stand is if they censor a lot of the stuff, such as swearing. That is something that makes Skins what it is. It's in your face, it's 'straight up' and it's not pretty. It's teenage life. Kids do talk like that. Why would MTV want to censor? Oh, right...parent complaints. Oh my God, parents...GROW UP. I'm sure most of them did that shit and worse when they were teens. GET OVER IT. It's real life. You can't protect your kids from the real world.

I just HOPE that it is somehow made known to the new viewers, the ones who don't know what Skins is or that this is a remake, that it IS a remake. That there is an original version from the UK that kicks some serious ass. The original deserves all the credit; the new viewers should be completely aware of the original version. AND...I really hope it's not a "OMG, UK skins sucks!" It's like, THIS IS THE ORIGINAL! Bleh.

Whatever. Rant over. Let's just give this shit a chance.

Cry For The Moon

When EPICA was Sahara Dust, they made a demo. And I'm listening to that demo. It contains two songs, Cry For The Moon and Illusive Consensus. It's so interesting to hear what they sounded like at first. How different it's become.

Cry For The Moon has come a long way. They aren't just a metal band. They are way more than that. ^_^

"Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the hole truth can we disclose
The soul of this sick bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever

Indoctrinated minds so very often
Contain sick thoughts
And commit most of the evil they preach against

Don't try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes opens reality

Eternal silence cries loud for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget

You cannot hide yourself behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the hole truth can we disclose
The soul of this sick bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever

Virginity has been stolen at very young ages
And the extinguisher loses it's immunity
Morbid abuse of power in the garden of Eden
Where the apple gets a youthful face

Eternal silence cries loud for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget

Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the hole truth can we disclose
The soul of this sick bulwark forever and ever

You can't go on hiding yourself
Behind old fashioned fairytales
And keep washing your hands in innocence

Have you ever felt...

skins, Fragile
...Like you can't believe you are yourself? You see yourself in a picture with someone and you think, "Is that really me?" It's not an embarrassing picture or anything of that nature. It's just a picture. A memory that you hold dear. But you are surprised it's you. You're not ashamed of it, either. It's just like, "Wow...that was me. That is me."

I've been going through old pictures, obviously. Maybe I'm just someone who doesn't pay much attention to appearance...I don't know. I mean, I see people all the time. Their appearance, personality, everything...I'm used to it. I look, what I'm like. I still get surprised that who I see looking back in the mirror is me. I don't even think I'm getting across what I'm trying to.

Maybe this is why I love photography so much. It can capture people, their emotions, situations. It captures a memory forever. Something that will help you remember and look back on something. It's special like that. A photo is just there.

Simone Simons

me and Simone
I haven't met too many famous people. A lot of people say "Who?!" when I say I met Simone Simons. Sadly, many people are unaware of this lovely lady.

I met her before the Epica concert (the band she's in) in Atlanta, GA. My friend and I thought it'd be a little nicer to meet before the show than after. They do meet and greets, but those are short and awkward. This wasn't. Simone saw us waiting outside the venue and walked over to us. She asked us how we were, told us the tour was going well and hoped we would enjoy the show. We also got a picture and autograph. Now, I don't know if I can really get across how sweet and genuine she is. Truly. I read in an interview she said she doesn't want to come off as boring and that she's just a normal girl. She wasn't boring and was very kind. I'm hoping to meet her again when I see Epica in November.

If you haven't heard of Epica or Simone, please check them out. ;) A very talented band and such a wonderful singer.

I freely admit that I read the first five Gossip Girl books one summer a few years ago. There are like ten or something books in that series, but I stopped at five. It got too silly for my taste. I was excited when I found out about the tv show. I watched the first few episodes until the same thing with the books happened with the tv series. It got too silly. When it comes to television, we must understand it can be exaggerated. Hello, it's tv! There are some lines, however, were shows become just too silly. That's what happened with Gossip Girl.

Do I need to go into detail about Secret Life of the American Teenager? Really? Ugh, this show is something I've had a problem with since I heard about it. A teen show centered around a 15 year old girl who gets pregnant? Um...doesn't America have a HUGE number of pregnant teens? I guess if they are trying to get teens to not do it, then they should show the negative aspects. Wait...then why is this show making it out like having a baby as a teen doesn't mess up your life? And marriage? Then everyone is talking about wanting to have sex? Okay..

Now, a show MANY American Teenagers are not aware of is Skins. It's a british tv show that follows the lives of a group of friends in sixth form. These kids, compared to the characters of Gossip Girl and Secret Life of the American Teenager, are wild. They have sex, they drink, they do drugs, they party and they say fuck every two minutes. Oh, and did I mention that the actors who are in Skins aren't in their 20s. They were all 16, the age of the characters. This show is about what teens do. Yeah, there are a good amount of teens who don't drink, do drugs, have sex...etc. But something many people look over or don't want to acknowledge, there are a good amount of teens that do that stuff. This show does have moments of exaggeration (it's a tv show of God's sake) but a lot of it is realistic. Much more than Gossip Girl or Secret Life. This show deals with topics like relationships, depression, death, eating disorders, sexual orientation, and others.

Some appeal for American teens? Uhm, they love hot guys in the shows, and Skins has that. Nick Hoult, Mitch Hewer, Joe Dempsie, Dev Patel, Mike Bailey. Hot girls, for guys appeal. April Pearson, Larissa Wilson, Hannah Murray and Kaya Scodelario.

Oh, and unlike Gossip Girl, when they are 18 and have to go off to university, the whole cast of Skins changes. Every two years the cast changes. Kaya, who played Effy, remained on the show for all four seasons because she was 14 and 15 during the first two seasons. It keeps it fresh and realistic. Just give this show a chance. These characters are great and work really well. If you do give it a chance, start out with the first generation (seasons 1 and 2). They are in the picture above.

'Vampire Craze' Nonsense

skins, Fragile
I've touched on some vampire books before, but not the whole 'craze' that seems to be affecting teenagers...well girls. Seems a little odd, eh? Vampires being this popular. They have been popular for a long time, but it's even bigger now. Unfortunately, that is thanks to the Twilight series. (I refuse to call it 'the Twilight Saga') Now, time for the HUGE vampire things going on:

Twilight- 1.) I used to love this series and freely admit that. 2.) Now I hate this series and freely admit that. I read the books literally right before it got all huge. Looking back on the series, it seems to be about a pathetic loner who depends too much on her vampire boyfriend. Not only that, but the whole love that is supposedly there, I don't believe. She wanted to be turned into a vampire, but how can someone decide that so quickly, having known the 'love of their life' for such a short period of time? Bella was extremely flawed and Edward was Mr. Perfect. Cheesy and unrealistic. Some might say, "it's vampires, since when is this realistic?" However, it's set to be in the real world. I could go on.....

True Blood- I was at Blockbuster and saw the first season first disc available for rental. I don't mind cussing so much (Hey, I watch Skins) but this got on my nerves. All the sex, cussing, and accents were a bit much. I've only seen a few episodes, so I should probably see more of it to judge. That's my take on it from what I've seen. It is better than Twilight, though.

The Vampire Diaries- I decided to watch it. And I liked it. It is cheesy at times, but it does work. Elena is a little pathetic at times, but she makes up for it with her truly caring nature and determination. She can somewhat manage to fend for herself. I do feel bad for her at times, unlike Bella. The thing with Katherine is a great twist and it's extremely intriguing. This is a series that makes you want to know what happens with more than just one person. I'm really looking forward to the second season to see what happens.

House of Night- Out of these four vampire things, I've got to say that this possibly surpasses Twilight in being the worst. (Understand that I am a HUGE anti-Twilight person. HUGE.) The thing is, this series tries way to hard to be cool and 'hip'. The characters are weak and uninteresting. I felt like I wasn't meant to care too deeply. The set up is very similar to my favorite, Vampire Academy. They came out within months of each other, so it's a little eerie they have such common plot-esque things. It's very easy to make the whole boarding school thing cheesy when it involves supernatural, fantasy, science-fiction topics. And in most cases, it does end up cheesy. House of Night fails terribly at being able to be taken seriously. Not to mention unrealistic things that occur.

When it comes to creating a different 'world' such as fantasy, science-fiction or supernatural there are limits to when it can get too out of hand and of course, it depends on how the writer develops such things. For example, the world of Harry Potter manages to keep expanding without the realistic aspect being lost. The opposite of this is what happens in Twilight and House of Night. When those 'worlds' were expanded upon, it seem too far-fetched. Placing a fantasy, science-fiction or supernatural thing in the 'real world' can be difficult. Making it realistic isn't easily done.

I know I've stated this on an annoying amount of occasions, but I'm still surprised that the Vampire Academy series hasn't been put into something on screen. It's a highly successful book series with something completely different than the vampire genre has seen.  It's about two best friends, Rose Hathaway and Vasilisa 'Lissa' Dragomir. Rose is a Dhampir, half-human, half-vampire. Lissa is a Moroi, the good vampires. The Dhampirs, also known as guardians, train to protect the Moroi from Strigoi, the bad vampires. Moroi are living, Strigoi are dead. The Moroi have 12 Royal Houses: Badica, Conta, Dashkov, Dragomir, Drozdov, Ivashkov, Lazar, Ozera, Szelsky, Voda, Zeklos and Tarus. Lissa is Princess Vasilisa Dragomir and the last of the Dragomirs.  What isn't intriguing about that?!

What surprises me the most about nothing happening with this series is not only that it's highly successful, it's got a new take on the vampire's fresh, the vampire craze is bringing in big the companies will make loads of money, a book trailer was made for it which will be shown before Eclipse in theaters, they are making official merchandise for it........I could go on. My question is: What is stopping this from happening? I know movie companies and such are all bleh, but there are points for why it would be successful.

Done with my rant. Later

Being a HUGE Vampire Academy fan, I've seen tons of different cast ideas. TONS. And I noticed two of the girls picked as the main character, Rose, the most look EXTREMELY similar. Megan Fox and Odette Yustman...

And two other actresses I noticed who look similar, Kaya Scodelario and Alexandra Daddario. (AND BOTH OF THEIR LAST NAMES END IN 'RIO') XD

I don't know if they'd be widely acknowledged to looking a like or not, but whatever. xD I've got some more excited stuff relating to Vampire Academy to post, but I don't have time at the moment. I'll post it either tonight or tomorrow. Later.

Exciting Music Pt. 1

I'm not one who always needs new music...I stick with the stuff I have for awhile. I don't go looking for new music or anything. I'm a huge fan of Nightwish--like HUGE--and considering that, I know that the ALL GIRL Finnish rock band Indica opened for them during the most recent tour. I never really tried listening to them until a few days ago...and I am amazed.

indica Pictures, Images and Photos

I wouldn't say that these girls have extraordinary talent or anything, but they work really well together and have some very awesome songs. It's very different than typical bands that fit in their genre, "rock band". Of course, most of their songs are in Finnish, but I don't mind it, not that I understand it. I'm looking forward to their album being released with English versions of their songs.

But something that really stands out to me is that they truly seem to enjoy what they are doing. Bands claim that all the time, but this is one of the few bands I see TRULY enjoying everything. I wish them the best. And to leave you with something:

Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead came out yesterday. Uhm, yeah. I finished it in a day. I know I'll need to re-read it in a slower way soon.

Before I go into a very in depth discussion, this contains SPOILERS. Do *NOT* read this if you have no intention of knowing what happened in SPIRIT BOUND.

Thoughts and such:

After reading Blood Promise, the thoughts are in your head of breaking Victor out of jail and turning Dimitri back. 1.) I didn't think that would be realistic at all. 2.) I didn't think it would actually happen. I was wrong on both.

I was right, however, on the fact that Dimitri wouldn't be able to face Rose and that would be over. While reading it, their scenes together once he was Dhampir again were truly heartbreaking. However, I prefer to see her with Adrian. Speaking of which, Adrian. I liked their interactions together. Speaking of relationships, I also liked Lissa and Christian's relationship. It was freaking hilarious. I've got to agree with Rose on that. They were really funny. Attempting to make the other jealous and claim that they don't care abotu the other. Ah, that was amusing!

Now theres a huge rivalry between Dimitri and Adrian. I've got to say, Dimitri is still in love with Rose. He cares a lot about her. Here's something to think about: If he didn't care, how did he know she and Adrian were together? I mean, it's not like when they brought a Strigoi back to court that all people were talking about was Rose and Adrian. I'm thinking either he saw them together while he was Strigoi or he asked someone.

I do think Adrian proved himself in this book. And in the last scene with Rose. The almost sex scene. Adrian wasn't all pushing it like any Royal Moroi would. I blame Rose for the whole biting thing, tho.

Speaking of Rose...she really pissed me off in this book. Her constant thinking of trying to get Dimitri back. She told Adrian she'd give him a chance and then she went after Dimitri. I'm sorry, but that was NOT right. I don't care if people think they are soulmates...that's just wrong. And then when she KEPT attempting to talk to Dimitri, even tho he did NOT want to speak to her. For God's sake, get over him. It's not going to be like it was. It'll never be like it was. She needs to understand that. It's not that I'm trying to push her towards Adrian. If she doesn't want him, then that's fine. The worse parts of her personality shined through in this book. Also, calling the Queen a bitch when she HAD been being very nice to her. Come on.

Now on to questions I have:

-Who killed the Queen?
-Was the Queen's rude attitude towards Rose all an act?
-What happened to Victor and Robert?
-If there are, what are the side effects to Dimitri being turned from a Strigoi to a Dhampir?
-Who stole those files Sydney was talking about?
-Why were they taken?
-Will Rose and Lissa get caught for having broken Victor Dashkov out of jail?

Predictions for the FINAL book: (AHHHH!)

-Involving the Queen's murder, I think it was either Victor and his brother, the Ivashkovs, or the Ivashkovs (including Adrian). I do think Rose might have been compelled into doing it. When Lissa used her compulsion on the guard at the prison, the guard couldn't remember anything. Rose might not either. I think Adrian might have been involved *cry*. This whole statement of "you're a dream within a dream" could be shadowing that the whole scene didn't actually happen. JUST a THOUGHT. Not saying it did happen, just what seems possible.

-Still on the topic of the Queen, I really doing think that she was only so rude to Rose because of the image the Queen had to keep. It sounds really shallow, but from the letter and how she had been acting towards Rose in this book, I think it was all just an act.

-Obviously, Victor and Robert got away. All in all, they ARE coming back. They might even be in court already. Considering Rose and Lissa managed to get into the prison using compulsion and such, I don't think it is a stretch to say Victor and Robert could do that. Plus, Robert has known about his abilities longer and learned more about them than Lissa.

-From my perspective, Dimitri's whole turning back to a Dhampir that easily is a bit unrealistic. Taking that into account, I'm thinking that there will be some side effects on him.

-I don't have any idea about who stole the files Sydney is looking for. Just throwing guesses out there, perhaps Victor? Maybe someone for the Queen? No clue. I'm thinking the reasoning behind it was to find out about Lissa's half-sibling.

-Going back to the same opinion from Dimitri turning back into a Dhampir, I can't see Rose and Lissa really getting away with having gotten Victor out of jail. If they get in trouble, I don't know, but I feel like that *has* to come out in some way.

Miscellaneous Stuff:

I don't think I said it, but I can see Rose ending up with no guy. Not that I'd want that to happen, but considering this whole Dimitri/Adrian thing...yeah. All in all, I think this is the best book in the whole series. It truly was action-packed. Praise goes to Richelle Mead. Looking forward to December 7th!
